What Norm's is Planting for You Now

Hello friends!
March is growing into something beautiful. We’re excited to welcome you all back to the nursery soon. Winter is revisiting us this weekend, but our greenhouses are beginning to fill with a wide variety of plants. Tropical houseplants, succulents, annual bedding plants, custom hanging baskets and patio pots, seed-grown vegetable transplants, native perennials, trees, evergreens, and shrubs of many sizes.
While winter still comes and goes, our retail location remains seasonally closed- but appointments can always be made by email or phone.
We will begin the un-winterizing of the nursery plants in April, but they remain protected in mulch and dormant still. We hold with caution for the late season cold nights and storms. Much like this, the prairie is not yet awake. Many insects are still nesting in our natural areas. These areas with remaining vegetation are dormant, and we move with caution as spring approaches. If an area remains with winter structure and vegetation, we are providing a place for nature to exist. A vital part of our community. A bit underappreciated in some eyes.
You’ll find photos and updates on some of our in-progress growing this season in the newsletter. If you’d share with a few friends, we’d certainly appreciate it.
Thank you for taking the time to read, consider, share, and garden.

Seed grown vegetable transplants-tomatoes

A preliminary list of our tomato varieties can be found below. While not exhaustive, this lays the framework for our estimated available varieties this spring. More crops to be shared in our April newsletter. If you’re new to vegetable transplants with Norm’s, we grow from seed in our custom soil blend. This is a part of each season in our greenhouses in February and March, this year for the 55th growing season.

If you’re passionate about a variety and would like to place a special order, we will certainly try to accomodate grow list requests. Our grow list is constantly changing and requires a curious group of plant hobbysists, professionals, nature enthusiasts, and community members to make our operation and grow list so unique each year.
Native Perennials
We’re eager to continue to expand our native plant grow list. A few of the selections we’re excited to add to the benches this season:
Compass plant (Silphium laciniatum)
Big and tall, great for the back of the landscape border or in naturalized areas
Soil tolerant, resilient plant with the height to put on a show

Spotted bee balm (Monarda punctata)
Unique flower structure
Foliage changes with seasons
Mid layer to structural plant- layers well with groundcover layers to shade root zone and encourage upright form

Fox sedge (Carex vulpinoidea)
Found in wet meadows and stream edges with tolerance to clay and poorly drained soils
Arching habit, mig layer to groundcover grass species
Shelter and food for invertebrates, songbirds, and waterfowl

Garden Design & Installation by Norm's
We’re here to help naturalize your landscape spaces. If you’re considering a project, we’d love to learn more about the work. Our craftsman team is eager to contribute to horticulture and ecology in our community.
We continuously train our team for the season with focus on the details. In combination with hands-on field management, we create gardens that are ready to establish for long-term success. Gardens rooted in our prairie plant palette belong in our landscape, and we’re here to help make that happen.
