Hello there!

July and August brings often-harsh heat, wind, occasional rains, and humidity. And while we’re grateful for the occasional rains, we’ve trudged through this past month with primarily drought conditions.

If you’re beginning to see foliage drop, yellowing leaves, or scorching on the leaf edges, your landscape plants may be experiencing drought stress. While we emphasize the importance of water conservation and reducing water waste,  bi-weekly watering during drought conditions can help reduce damage and future plant loss. The past week’s quick rain showers have helped reduce some stress, however we continue to remain behind for the season.

Fall planting season comes soon, as cooler temps and rain bring much needed reprieve. If you’d like to discuss tree planting for your property, we are booking our fall schedule.

We hope you enjoy this month’s insights, and we’d love to welcome you back to the nursery again soon!

A Quick Trip to Michigan with Perennial Plant Association

We’re proud to be a part of the Perennial Plant Association- to celebrate, support, share, and learn more about all of the unique, pollinator-essential, and beautiful plants that make up our plant communities.

The importance of the perennial layer of plantings in our design work is unparalleled for beauty, weed suppression, erosion control, and storm water management; it also plays an essential part in contributing to our ecosystem’s biodiversity to encourage healthy populations of animals and insects.

Our vote for the 2029 Perennial Plant of the year was cast- and we’re excited to share the 2027 Perennial Plant of the Year (PPOY).

2027 will be the year of ‘Summer’s Swan Song’ Vernonia, commonly known as Summer’s Swan Song Ironweed. Ironweed is a unique, diverse species observed at many heights, forms, and textures. Summer’s Swan Song Ironweed is a compact and fine foliaged structural perennial at 2-3’ tall, and 3-4’ wide. There are unique fall purple flowers, standing tall late in the season with goldenrod, asters, little bluestem, and joe pye weed.

We’re eager to stock the plant for 2027, but our 2026 season inventory offers Vernonia lettermanii and Vernonia ‘Iron Butterfly’- two relatives to the selected PPOY.
