Planning Ahead – A Thoughtful Timeline for Your Garden Design Project with Norm’s

Dreaming of a new landscape? Thoughtful planning is key! Whether it’s a native planting, a patio retreat, or a full-property transformation, timing matters. With a current design and installation backlog of about 6-8 months, we’ve outlined some details on how to build a timeline for a successful project.

Step 1: Define Your Vision (Month 1)

  • Consider your goals—shade, erosion control, pollinator support, seasonal beauty, functional spaces.

  • Gather inspiration from gardens, local landscapes, and plant palettes.

  • Reach out early! With demand high, securing a spot on the design and installation schedule is essential. Fall planting projects are designed and planned over several months in the spring and summer months; spring planting projects are designed/planned in the fall and winter months.

Step 2: Design, Planning & Preparation (Month 2–5)

  • Meet with Connor to evaluate your project needs and goals with a detailed site assessment of exposure, stormwater, and soil conditions.

  • Finalize the design concept, including hardscape elements, phased plantings, and grading/drainage considerations.

  • Coordinate logistics, scheduling contractors for removals, grading, hardscape, or irrigation needs if necessary.

  • Secure required permits and approvals before installation begins.

Step 3: Final Adjustments & Installation (Month 5–8+)

  • Review installation details, phases, and scheduling.

  • Begin phased planting, allowing for seasonal conditions and plant establishment.

  • Enjoy the transformation, knowing thoughtful timing leads to lasting success!

Great landscapes start with smart, careful planning! If you’re envisioning a project, start the conversation with a multi-step process in mind.

Your monthly watering reminder…:)

Newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials planted within the past year require weekly rains of over an inch to remain saturated and in good shape for establishment. If it’s been over a week since it rained, we’d encourage deep waterings of your plants’ root zones to ensure happy young plants!

PLANT FEATURE OF THE MONTH:

APPALACHIAN SEDGE

  • ree

Appalachian Sedge (Carex appalachica)

Looking for a low-maintenance, native ground cover that thrives in dry shade? Appalachian Sedge is a standout choice for naturalistic landscapes, offering fine-textured foliage and adaptability to challenging conditions.

Why Choose Appalachian Sedge?

  • Native Resilience: Found in dry or mesic forests across eastern North America, this sedge is well-suited to woodland gardens and shaded borders.

  • Elegant Texture: Its graceful, arching leaves create soft movement in the landscape, adding a naturalistic feel.

  • Drought Tolerance: Once established, it requires minimal watering, making it ideal for low-maintenance landscapes.

  • Wildlife Benefits: Provides nesting habitat for wildlife and seeds for birds, supporting local ecosystems.

Best Uses in the Landscape

  • Ground Cover & Lawn Alternative: Forms dense tufts that slowly spread, offering a sustainable replacement for turf in shaded areas.

  • Underplanting for Trees & Shrubs: Performs beneath black walnut and other trees where traditional turf struggles.

  • Erosion Control: Helps stabilize soil on slopes and woodland edges.

Growing Tips

  • Sun & Soil: Prefers partial to full shade in well-drained soil but can tolerate some sun with adequate moisture.

  • Spacing: Plant in masses roughly 18” “on-center” for a lush, naturalized effect.

Whether you’re planting a woodland garden or seeking a durable native ground cover. Appalachian Sedge is a reliable and beautiful addition to the right site.
